Kayaking Courses

Combine your active holiday with skills of seakayaking, in the most amazing surroundings!

Experience the unique Westfjords of Iceland, while learning everything you need, to handle your sea kayak properly and safely, by the standards of EPP2 (Euro Paddle Pass level 2).

For the beginner and semi-experienced paddler, Borea Adventures and I, Corpus offers this unique course, where you gain the necessary experience and understanding of handling your kayak in calm waters. With all the basic strokes, rescues and knowledge, this course mixes practice with theory, which also include equipment, safety and how to plan your own trip. All this in the surroundings of the best that Iceland has to offer, with crystal-clear water, high mountaincliffs and all kinds of wildlife, both above and under sea level.

From our base at the capital of the Westfjords, Ísafjörður, we will visit three different fjords during the 3½ days-course, returning back to Ísafjörður every day. The time will allow plenty of opportunity to practice all the moves, paddle some distance and enjoy the scenery. The course will be conducted in english by both an Icelandic and Danish instructor, who will be in charge of all teaching and safety, along with the support and joy of local knowledge and folktales of the land.

This course is for everybody above the age of 15, who is in a fairly good shape and ready for an experience of a lifetime! All equipment, lunch and transport during the course is included in the price, while transport to and from Ísafjördur, accommodation and other meals is excl.

There are a number of options for accommodation in Ísafjördur, as well as plenty of places to shop groceries or dine out. Visit the local tourist-website www.westfjords.is for further information. Click here for information about how to get to Ísafjördur, .

Trip itinerary

24 July - Arrive to Ísafjörður in the afternoon the latest, with pick-up at the airport for those who arrive directly from Reykjavik by plane. After check-in at your accommodation of choice, we meet at the office of Borea Adventure for some traditional, icelandic soup (included in the price) while going over the details of the program, exchanging experiences and expectations. We will also let you know a bit about Ísafjördur city and the Westfjords in general, before handing out your personal kayak-equipment, making you ready for the next day.

25 July - A whole day on the waters surrounding Ísafjördur. We meet at the office at 8 o’clock, from where we will pick up our equipment and head for the kayaks down at the habour. Here, you will learn how to adjust your kayak, enter and exit it correctly and learn all the basic strokes to get you going. From the inner-fjord, we will then seek along the coast toward Arnarnas, the mouth of the fjord, for a lunchbreak. This will be on the very edge of the Atlantic Ocean and with a good view of the surrounding mountains. After lunch, we develop our technique, before crossing the mouth of the fjord and head inwards again, back to Ísafjördur. Before heading to shore, we practice wet-exit and partner-rescue. The day ends back at the office late afternoon.

26 July - Another whole day on the water, and with a theory-lesson in the evening. Once again, we meet at the office at 8 o’clock, to travel by bus to Önundarfjördur. In this very deserted and beautiful part of the Westfjords, we will add to the technique with the aim of better handling and control. This is also an area with a more obvious effect of tides and currents, of which we will explore. In the afternoon, we will return to Ísafjördur, meeting up again at Borea Adventures Base Camp, after dinnertime. Here, we will go through the topics of safety, marks and rules on the water and how to plan a trip on your own. The planning will be a practical assignment, as it will be used for the trip the following day.

27 July - Yet another whole day in the kayaks, meeting up once again at the office at 8 o’clock, to jump on the bus. From here, we will drive to the bottom of Seydisfjörður, to execute the planning of yesterday. The trip will lead us to the neighbourfjord Hestfjördur, and on the way, we will practise the skills and techniques of the past couple of days. By arrivel, the last of the techniques will we introduced and practiced. Meanwhile, the bus will arrive, taking us back to Ísafjörður. Upon arrivel at the office, a short evaluation will be conducted, and – as an option – a final dinner together can be arranged, in the evening (not included in the price).

28 July - If you are flying out of Ísafjörður, there will be a pick-up from your accommodation to the airport on this day, scheduled to fit your departure. We do however recommend that you stay few extra day to explore the surroundings of Ísafjörður or other parts of the Westfjords. We will be happy to recommend you different kinds of day trips or areas of your interest.

OBS: As with sea kayaking in general, this program will depend on the right weather and wind conditions, and may be altered on a day-to-day-basis, for safety reasons. The course of the technique, however, will be maintained – one way or the other.

Welcome to the website for Borea Adventures, Iceland, your number one stop for Arctic adventures in high latitudes. We provide great adventures and expeditions in Iceland, Greenland, East Greenland, Jan Mayen and Svalbard (Spitzbergen), mainly using our spacious yacht, the Aurora. Our philosophy is to make our trips as silent as possible where we minimize the use of motorized power and encourage physical activities, whether sea kayaking, climbing, sailing, walking and hiking, wildlife, ski touring and backcountry skiing for beginners, experts and people of all ages. The North Atlantic is our playground and we offer scheduled trips for individuals and groups as well as customized itineraries and charter for groups. We travel in harmony with the wildlife of the area: Arctic Foxes, Birds, Seals, Whales and Polar Bears. Aurora is a sturdy expedition yacht and was raced four times around the globe as part of the Clipper Round the World yacht race under the ownership of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. She gives us a great opportunity to provide Arctic adventures in areas that are hard to reach otherwise. We call her our floating basecamp. Our name is derived from Greek mythology where Boreas was the god of the north wind. Aurora on the other hand was the Roman rosy-fingered goddess of dawn. Aurora Borealis is a name for the Northern lights which are common in our area. As we humans have proven through the decades, names can be hard to remember. Especially if a bit of alcohol gets passed around the galley too many times! You might spell our name Boreal Adventures, Borial Adventures, Borea Adventrues and Borealis Adventures. Thank you for visiting Borea Adventures.
