Kvíar Ski Lodge - NEW!
World class skiing during the day, cozy dinner by the fire in the evenings
Borea is opening up a lodge in the center of Hornstrandir Nature Reserve. The beautiful abandoned farm of Kvíar is becoming a cozy but rugged haven for adventurers to enjoy great atmosphere after a great day out. The house was built in 1921 and in 1948, the last inhabitants left this isolated place in search for a better life. Though not many people would want to live there permanently, Kvíar is a great getaway and the perfect stepping stone for our trips both in winter and summer. We use our comfortable speed boat Bjarnarnes to shuttle us to the best skiing locations in the area. At the end of the day, the speed boat picks the group up and takes it back to Kvíar where mouth-watering dinner awaits. The house has three rooms upstairs and two downstairs plus a living room. The kitchen, storage and drying room is in the cellar.
We promise that you will return home with great memories after a week far away from modern amenities.
Trip itinerary
Day 1. Departure in the afternoon with our speed boat Bjarnarnes from Bolungarvík. Our destination is Kvíar between the fjords of Veiðileysufjörður and Lónafjörður. You can choose whether to just settle in or get you skis on for a ski up the valley of Kvíadalur and take a short run before some snacks in the living room.
Day 2. An hour boat ride will take us to the head of Hesteyrarfjörður where we sholder our packs and with skins on, we head up to Kjaransvíkurskarð and follow the mountian ridges before our first run down on the North side. At the end of the day, we take a beautiful run all the way down to the water in Veiðileysufjörður Fjord. Boat ride back to Kvíar where a great meal awaits us.
Day 3. After a hearty breakfast we get going on our boat Bjarnarnes to Veiðileysufjörður where we plan to ski over to Lónafjörður Fjord. We make at least two long runs that day and end in Rangali, one of the most beautiful fjordscapes in Iceland. Boat ride back to Kvíar Lodge.
Day 4. We plan to spend the whole day exploring the mountains in Lónafjörður. Many options for easy long runs and steep couloirs.
Day 5. On the last full day, we start in Sópandi, a small cove in Lónafjörður where lots of seals lie on the rocks along the shoreline. We ski up and to the top of Hyrnukjölur if conditions are good and take a long run down to Hrafnjörður.
Day 6. We take an early morning and use the day to search for the best skiing in Hrafnfjörður. There are many options and it's probably the best skiing in the whole area. The mountains of Hvítserkur and Bláfell are a must before heading back home in time for the evening flight to Reykjavík.
