Meet The Crew, the faces behind the adventures – your trusted companions exploring the wonders of Iceland’s West Fjords.

Rúnar Karlsson

Rúnar is the founder of our company. The real deal outdoorsman and the multitool you strive to be. The best source of local knowledge who knows every crack, valley, and summit in the mountains and fjords around. Who can say they’ve ice climbed Dynjandi for the challenge and also used that same skill to rescue a missing dog from the icy tops of the surrounding mountains here in Ísafjörður.

Nanný Guðmundsdóttir

Nanný is the driving force and the heart of the company. She was born in Ísafjörður and has lived there most of her life. Her hobbies include cycling, skiing and just being outdoors breathing in the fresh mountain air of the Westfjords. She studied to become a kindergarten teacher, so she has a good knowledge on how to manage a diverse group of people and bring us all together. She joined the company in 2012.

Regína Sif Rúnarsdóttir

Personable and calming, Regína will ease your concerns that may arise. Consistently making life better for travellers and guides alike, you can’t put value on human kindness. Whether it’s a problem-solving email, or the plants that brighten up the office when you first step into our cozy space. She’s up for a chat, but the question is, are you? Oh yeah, and that problem you had…not so impossible huh?

Davíð Hjaltason

As local as you can get but will keep you guessing with his charming British accent. A valued member of the office and behind the scenes team, he will ensure that you can spend more time taking it easy. Hakuna Matata!

Stjáni (Kristján R Guðmundsson)

Captain of our beautiful vessel Sif. Believes that life is better on a boat so will keep us safe and sound while we motor the fjords and pass the most Northern lighthouse in Iceland. He never get’s tired of the sea, his free time he spends exploring the world on his sailboat. Loves a good prank, but don’t worry his target is always the guides.

Sigrún Auðardóttir

Sigrún is a local girl that grew up with cross country skis under her feet and kayaking the fjords. She is one of the strongest and most easy going spirit among our staff and fun to be around.

Joonas Kinni

Born and raised in Finland, Joonas found his way to Iceland for his master’s degree in coastal and marine management. He’s been with us for many seasons and was the driving force in making the sauna in Kviar Lodge as you can imagine. Joonas has found the perfect balance by spending the long summer days in Iceland and the winter in Saudi Arabia where he works as a research diver. As a true Finn, Joonas is an avid knitter, and you can find him on social media under @knitting_man

Jake Thompson

Jake’s born in Rome, lived in London and Dhaka, but left all for open air life in Ísafjörður. He has been with us for the last 4 seasons and quickly became a big part of the Borea family. His positive attitude and jokes will make you fall in love with the geology and flora on our hiking tours. Geology and botany will become your new guilty pleasures if it’s not already and you’ll be convinced to settle here too!

Justin Brown

From Michigan US, Justin first came to Ísafjörður in 2017 completing a masters at the University Center of the Westfjords. He fell in love with the place, created the first provincial whale sighting catalogue and has since bought an apartment in town with his girlfriend Michelle. He is an avid hiker and diver, but you can also find him at the local brewery sharing beers with his friends.

Justas Šuscickis

Part of the team that built avalanche barriers locally, Justas is definitely comfortable in the mountains. Safety is key at all times, and that is the same standard for the tours he, and all our guides operate. You can count on him to make time for thoughtful conversations. Justas loves ski touring and is passionate about water sports such as kayaking, surfing and wake boarding. Doesn’t miss an opportunity to organise a Lithuanian Sauna session experience.

Birte Technau

Our Alpine ‘Bird’ as she sometimes goes by, flies home to Iceland in the summer as much of our wildlife. Luckily for you she’s back to guide you straight to them. Conservationist at heart, Birte spent a summer in Hornstrandir researching Arctic foxes. Her focus was their poop, and she has the puns to keep you laughing. Birte is also a published scientific author, check out her article here!

Isabelle Price

Our multinational, multi-linguist returning guide loves the expanse of Iceland. It’s nice to be able to describe it in French too, no? Time in nature is time well spent. While admiring the remaining spots of snow, or hiking to beautiful moraines, Isabelle’s knowledge will spark even more wonder.

Ólafur Tryggvi Guðmundsson

Hailing from nearby Bolungarvík, Oli’s helpful charm and ‘let’s go’ attitude is energising. He may be one of our youngest guides but takes the profession seriously by pursuing professional guiding training at Mountaineering School of FAS. Loves Iceland, loves guiding.

Lukáš Polách

Lukáš feels home both in the mountains and in the water and loves to explore new terrains to ski and surf. In the winter he is usually on top of snowy mountains or ski patrolling in our local ski area. In the summer you will see him with us on the water or hiking around the mountains. Czech him out here, he is also one of the designers of Icelandic sustainable clothing brand @wildnessbrand

Brendan Jackson

Transatlantic experience leading outdoor expeditions exposes you to all sorts of situations. Brendan has the professionalism and craftsmanship to build adventures on great memories. Legend says that he arrived from Alaska by mushing dogs across the Arctic…believable.

Nicole Sühring

Originally from Germany, Nicole moved to Iceland to study and quickly developed a passion for the country’s stunning scenery and the thrill of surfing in cold, isolated areas. Today, our returning guide resides in Flateyri, where she runs an ocean adventure center. As a seasoned guide, Nicole is the ideal person to accompany you both on land and on the water. Either way, you are guaranteed a great adventure.

Luke Miller

Our Canadian outdoorsman is a jack of all trades as you may see him hiking, kayaking and cycling all in one day! His calming personality matches the serene beauty of the area and will be an attractant for bird songs. Luckily for you, his deep ornithological knowledge will identify and turn you bird curious!

Frosti Gunnarsson

The coldest thing about him is his name. He loves to guide and will warm up your day and share insight on what life is like in the Westfjords as a young man.
