Located just below the Arctic circle, the West Fjords are an ideal playground for winter mountaineering. This winter Borea Adventures will be offering courses intended to give people with little or no previous experience of arctic mountaineering an opportunity to try this in a safe and fun environment. This course can also be enjoyed by people with more previous experience.

Established in 1935, the Fossavatn Ski Marathon is the longest running sports event in Iceland. It is also by far the biggest ski race in the country with almost 250 participants, whereof 30-50 are overseas visitors. In 2004 the main distance of 50 km was launched, added to the traditional 20 km, 10 km and 7 km. All distances are done in classic style. If you join us on trips in early May you should check out the Fossavatn ski marathon and look at joining this fun event.

Finally back from Greenland after two great weeks sailing and enjoying the east coast of this magnificent country. The weather was too perfect. Sun everyday but very little wind so we had to motor more than we would have wanted to.

In late June we did a great trip in Jokulfirdir and the Hornstrandir nature reserve. Hjalti Karlsson, a biologist and head of the local branch for the Marine Research Institute, was our guide and we concentrated on looking at the wildlife of the area. One of the guests was Claire McManus, an acupuncturist from Boston US. She sent us this note and a link to a great collection of her photos. Check it out here.

Just added some kayaking photos from a trip last week to the Jokulfirdir area of Iceland. We had great weather but it got pretty windy in the afternoon for the last two days. But we had strong kayakers in the group so that didn´t change our plans. The album also contains few photos from other trips in the area

While Icelanders, and in particular us in the West Fjords, are enjoying one of the nicest summers in decades, UK and parts of northern Europe are getting hammered by rain and cold weather. The reason for this is that the lows that normally would come from America and then turn north east and come over or just south of Iceland are going much further south or almost straight across the Atlantic over to UK.
