Do you want to visit Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, but still have the comfort of staying in a cozy lodge during the night? Do you want to escape the stress of everyday life and experience the still, pure beauty and isolation of Hornstrandir?
Kvíar was a farm in Kvíadalur Valley, a beautiful setting at the edge of the water with panoramic views over the big Jökulfirðir Bay. With history of habitation since the 14th. century, you can clearly see signs of turf houses and stone walls around the farm.
The last inhabitants left in 1948 and the house was left open to the elements. In 2012, we came up with the idea of using the house for our adventures, turning it into a true adventure base for guests to enjoy. After a lot of hard labour, the house has been brought back to life, and offers adventure seekers and free spirits a perfect platform for all things outdoors.
Many volunteers, friends and professional craftsmen have helped with this massive task. All wood, sand and cement, insulation, furniture etc. had to be brought in by boat since there is no road connection. Many tons of building material over the course of four years.
The Service and Amenities in Kvíar
Our lodge requires the accompaniment of a guide to maintain the house and aid in the use of any heating or electrical appliances
