While Icelanders, and in particular us in the West Fjords, are enjoying one of the nicest summers in decades, UK and parts of northern Europe are getting hammered by rain and cold weather. The reason for this is that the lows that normally would come from America and then turn north east and come over or just south of Iceland are going much further south or almost straight across the Atlantic over to UK.
This week we´re offering a sailing course with skipper Samantha Fuller, a professional sailor from the UK. She was a skipper in the 2002-20003 Clipper Around the World Race and sailed with us from Portsmouth to Iceland last spring. Now she´s back for more fun. The wind has been excellent with 10 knots in the morning and up to 25 knots when the sun heats up the land and creates a powerful breeze blowing inland.
Last Friday the skipper and his family did a short trip to the neighbouring Seydisfjordur fjord. We anchored there for the night and the kids had a chance to play in the calm sea. The weather this last three weeks has been really nice, sunny and warm. Why not bring your kids on a trip with Borea Adventures next summer?
Just finished a great wildlife trip on Friday. Good small group of people from Wales, England and USA enjoyed the scenery and wildlife for five days in perfect weather.
Last weekend we sailed to Leirufjordur with a group of guys, the youngest age 14 and the oldest aged 87. One of these was Sigurjon Hallgrimsson (80) who was born there and spent the first 30-35 years of his life there as a farmer and fisherman, until he moved away when the Jokulfirdir (Glacier Fjords) area was completely abandoned in the late fifties.
Finally the skiing trips are finished and summer has begun. There is still a lot of snow in Glacier Fjords and we´re thinking about having at least one trip in June next year. We´ve had great people on board from France, USA, Canada and of course Iceland.
At the age of 68, former owner of AURORA Sir Robin Knox-Johnston has completed another solo round the world yacht race 35 years after he was the first man ever to do it. After being in third place in the last leg from New York to Bilbao he was in fourth place overall. Congratulations Robin, you are great inspiration to all of us…..
